Understanding the National School Lunch Program: Benefits & Eligibility

According to the USDA, the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program that operates in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children every school day. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946.

I am proud to serve as a community partner with Indianapolis Public Schools’ Foodservice Division. Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is the largest school district in Indiana, serving 61 schools and more than 26,000 lunches each school day. IPS participates in several USDA programs designed to support student nutrition:

  • School Breakfast Program
  • National School Lunch Program
  • After School Snack Program
  • Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program
  • Summer Food Service Program

Approximately 88% of IPS students qualify for free or reduced-price meals, a level consistent with many urban districts nationwide. This high participation underscores the essential role school meal programs play in supporting students and families.

IPS Foodservice emphasizes nutritional integrity and food safety. The department’s mission is to provide students with nutritious meals they will enjoy at the lowest possible cost to students, families, and taxpayers. Menus are planned to meet federal nutrition standards while offering appealing choices that encourage healthy eating habits.

Over the coming weeks, I will share an inside look at IPS Foodservice operations and offerings. You’ll learn how school meals are developed, how food safety and nutrition standards are maintained, and how USDA programs work to meet the health needs of children across the nation.

On a personal note: my son doesn’t carry a lunchbox—he goes to school with lunch money. That simple detail reflects how school meal programs fit into many families’ daily routines, helping ensure children receive reliable, nutritious meals.
