Sweet and savory is my favorite flavor pairing, and I rarely choose between the two. I try to include both whenever I can, which is why these sweet and tangy meatballs are always a hit.

When I plan a party, cocktail meatballs are one of the first things I make. They vanish quickly even when the recipe yields about 50 meatballs. The combination of savory beef, onion, and seasonings coated in a sticky-sweet, tangy sauce is irresistible.

These meatballs are party stars, so for larger gatherings I make a double batch and build the rest of the spread around them. Set out drinks, chips, and a simple dip and you’re ready to go. Guests always ask for the recipe because they can’t get enough.
The best part is how easy they are. Besides forming the meatballs, there aren’t many steps. You can brown them on the stove or use your slow cooker — the results are very similar. Slow cooking helps create a rich, sticky sauce that balances sweet and tangy perfectly.

Many recipes promise simplicity but require numerous steps and ingredients. This one is different: you may brown the meatballs first, but that’s the only extra step before slow cooking. Most of the ingredients are pantry staples, and if your slow cooker has a sear function you can brown right in the insert for fewer dishes to wash.
The sauce uses just two ingredients, while the meatballs get their savory depth from onion, garlic, and seasonings. Make sure each meatball gets a spoonful of sauce when you serve — it’s the best part.
If you don’t want to serve them as an appetizer, they also make a satisfying weeknight dinner. Serve over white rice or roasted potatoes with a simple salad or steamed vegetable for a full meal.

The meatballs are flavored with onion and seasonings and finished in a glossy sauce made from ketchup (or chili sauce) and grape jelly. If grape jelly isn’t your favorite, red currant or apple jelly are good alternatives. I prefer versions without corn syrup.
Serve the meatballs hot on a platter with toothpicks, or keep them in the slow cooker on warm so guests can serve themselves.

Description
Sweet and tangy meatballs are a classic party appetizer that’s easy to prepare in the oven or slow cooker and perfect for gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs ground beef (80-85% lean)
- 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 2 large eggs
- 1 white medium onion, minced (about 1 cup)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 Tbsp salt
- 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 2 Tbsp olive oil
- 2 cups ketchup or chili sauce
- 18 oz natural grape jelly
Instructions
- Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and chili powder in a large bowl until well combined.
- Form the mixture into 50 evenly sized meatballs, using roughly a rounded teaspoonful for each.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, or use the SEAR setting on your slow cooker. Brown the meatballs lightly in batches, then transfer to a plate.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine ketchup (or chili sauce) and grape jelly. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat. Pour about 2/3 cup of the sauce into the bottom of a Dutch oven or slow cooker insert, spreading it into an even layer.
- Layer one-third of the meatballs in the pan, top with another 2/3 cup of sauce, add the next third of meatballs, top with 2/3 cup sauce, and finish with the remaining meatballs and sauce.
- For a Dutch oven, cover and cook on low heat for about 3 hours, until the sauce thickens and the meat is cooked through.
- For a slow cooker, set to LOW and cook for 2–3 hours, until the sauce is very thick and the meatballs are cooked through.
- Serve hot on a platter with toothpicks.

Cooking By the Numbers…
Step 1 – Prep and Measure Ingredients
Mince one medium white onion (about 1 cup) and mince two cloves of garlic or press them through a garlic press. Measure the remaining ingredients as listed.

I like organic grass-fed ground chuck for extra flavor; it’s typically 80–85% lean. To make breadcrumbs, toast a few slices of bread then pulse them in a food processor until they reach breadcrumb consistency.
Step 2 – Make Beef Mixture
Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, eggs, minced onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and chili powder in a large bowl. Use your hands or a spatula to mix until everything is evenly combined.

Form the mixture into about 50 equal-sized meatballs using a rounded teaspoonful for each.

Step 3 – Brown the Meat
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and brown the meatballs in batches, about 5 minutes per batch. They should be lightly browned, not fully cooked. Transfer browned meatballs to a plate lined with paper towels. If your slow cooker has a SEAR setting, you can brown them in the insert.

Step 4 – Make Sauce
In a medium saucepan, combine ketchup or chili sauce with grape jelly and heat until it comes to a boil, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat. You can also do this in the slow cooker on the SEAR setting if preferred.

Step 5 – Layer Ingredients
Spoon 2/3 cup of the sauce into the bottom of a Dutch oven or slow cooker insert and spread it into an even layer. Place one-third of the meatballs on the bottom, spoon another 2/3 cup of sauce over them, add another third of the meatballs, top with 2/3 cup sauce, then finish with the remaining meatballs and sauce.

Step 6 – Cook
For a Dutch oven, cover and cook over low heat for about 3 hours until the sauce thickens and the meatballs are cooked through. In a slow cooker, cover and set to LOW for 2–3 hours until sauce is very thick and beef is fully cooked.

Arrange the meatballs on a platter with toothpicks or leave them in the slow cooker on warm for self-serve. Enjoy hot.
Can I Prepare This Appetizer Ahead of Time?
Yes. The slow cooker makes this easy to prepare in advance. Cook the meatballs ahead of time and keep them warm in the slow cooker until guests arrive. They can be plated on a platter or served directly from the cooker with toothpicks or a serving spoon.

If you want a different flavor profile, try classic Italian meatballs with red sauce or Moroccan-style meatballs with warm spices for another crowd-pleasing option. For more appetizer inspiration, explore other recipes and pick what fits your menu and taste.
