Yesterday Mrs. HB stopped by with homemade soup and checked on me after my germ-filled airplane ride. She’s such a thoughtful neighbor — she really deserves a blue ribbon for Friend of the Year.
She brought three-bean soup, chicken noodle soup, two Cokes because she insists everyone likes a Coke when they’re sick, and three bags of Earl Grey tea from a recent work conference. Bless her heart.
My husband? He brought home a pint of Chunky Monkey (my favorite), a box of toaster strudels, and a pack of Pik-Nik. That would have been totally rad if I were ten and riding a BMX, but still — you have to give the guy an A for effort.
Husbands… even after more than twenty years of marriage, they can still surprise you.
I picked up a $6 box of tapas on the way down and a $7.50 cheese-and-fruit platter on the way back. Sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind and treat yourself, especially during a 5½-hour flight.
Breakfast was $16.62 at a random coffee shop. Who knew a sausage-and-egg biscuit with a little chopped jalapeño could taste so good? It really does — you should try it. And when I ordered a “London Fog,” the barista didn’t know what that was. After I told her, she said it sounded amazing. Now I think that drink should be renamed “Where in the World Is Mavis? My Head Is in a Fog,” at least in that coffee shop.
The best steak tips and meatloaf sandwich I’ve had set us back $43.61, including two iced teas and a tip.
We also had unexpectedly good Cobb salads at the hotel — about $36 with a tip, if I remember correctly.
There were regular meals, too: the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers, ham soup, my first trip to Chick-fil-A, quinoa salad with salmon and Brussels sprouts. This is the part where I’m supposed to feel guilty about overspending and promise to do better next week, but I’m not going to.
Last week was the best food week of the year for me. A friend brought homemade soup, I spent 48 hours of undivided time with my husband, and then had three days in bed to rest. For me, that was perfect. I don’t want to be sick again anytime soon, but every once in a while mixing things up is pretty fantastic.
Life is just one surprise after another.
Keep on keepin’ on,
~Mavis
