Ingredients

  • 4 cups Milk, whole

  • 3/4 cup Sugar, white granulated

  • 1/2 cup Cocoa powder

  • 1/4 cup Corn starch

  • 3 tablespoons Butter

  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla extract

  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt

Directions

  • In a medium mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients (cocoa powder and corn starch). Sift the mixture through a fine sieve to remove lumps.
  • Transfer the sifted dry mix to a saucepan.
  • Over medium-low to medium heat, gradually whisk the milk into the dry ingredients until smooth. Add the salt and continue stirring.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, increasing the heat slightly if needed. Stir constantly and let it boil for 1½–2 minutes, then remove from heat.
  • Stir in the butter and vanilla extract until the butter is fully melted and incorporated.
  • Divide the pudding among individual serving dishes or bowls. Chill in the refrigerator for at least two hours before serving.

Notes

  • The color and flavor depend on the quality of the cocoa powder. Avoid using dry instant chocolate drink mixes.
  • Adjust sugar by ±1/4 cup to suit your taste.
  • Use whole milk for the best texture; substitutes will change the result.
  • Unsalted butter is recommended; salted butter may be used if preferred. Margarine and other substitutes are not recommended.

Want more chocolate?

For a deeper chocolate flavor, stir in a small amount (2–3 pieces) of finely chopped dark chocolate while the pudding is still hot. Mix until the chocolate melts completely for a “double chocolate” version with richer taste and color.

You can also sprinkle chocolate chips on top before chilling. As the pudding cools, it thickens and becomes creamier and even more chocolate-forward.

Chocolate pudding with ice cream

Serve warm pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a classic contrast of hot and cold. To make the flavor even richer, stir a tablespoon of nut butter or finely ground nuts (hazelnuts work exceptionally well) into the pudding before chilling. Slightly cool the pudding before adding ice cream so the scoop won’t melt immediately. Serve right away for best texture.

Homemade chocolate pudding is a simple, wholesome dessert that works well for celebrations or cozy family meals. Making it yourself lets you avoid artificial additives and control sweetness and richness. The result is a satisfying, natural treat that looks as good as it tastes.
