Cinnamon Applesauce Recipe for Babies: Simple Homemade Puree

Applesauce

My husband surprised me last week for my 30th birthday by sending me to Chicago for the weekend with my girlfriends. I didn’t know until the day before my flight. My friends had planned the trip with him long before we moved — what a thoughtful surprise!

Because of the weekend, posting was delayed, but it was worth it. We saw Shrek the Musical, enjoyed a facial, attended a surprise party with a delicious three-layer chocolate cake, ate at Italian Village, visited my former church, relaxed at a sunny pool party, browsed the farmers’ market, and finished with a backyard grilling party. It was a wonderfully refreshing break.

Now, back to baby food. Homemade applesauce is very simple to make and perfect for babies, but it’s also great for the whole family. I’ll admit I often struggle not to eat all the batch before saving it for Judah — it’s that good.

You can either puree the cooked apples for a smooth texture or pulse them in a food processor for a chunkier result. I’m currently moving toward chunkier applesauce for Judah as he gets older.

With the right apples, applesauce needs no additions, but I like to add a pinch of cinnamon to enhance the flavor. Judah loves it.

Ingredients:
apples (Braeburn, Red Delicious, or Honeycrisp are my favorites)
cinnamon, a pinch

Instructions:

1. Peel and dice the apples, then place them in a large saucepan. Sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon over the apples.

2. Bring the apples to a gentle boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer until the apples are soft, about 10–15 minutes, depending on the apple variety and the size of the pieces.

3. Once the apples are soft, puree them for a smooth applesauce or pulse in a food processor for a chunkier texture.

4. Let the applesauce cool before serving. Store portions in your preferred freezer-safe containers or refrigerate for short-term use.

Tip: This recipe is freezer-friendly and stores well in small portions for later use.
