Trifle is a classic dessert often seen as rich and heavy. This berry trifle is a lighter, fresher take on the traditional layered treat—delicious, colorful, and lower in calories.
Berry trifle

A berry trifle combines layered flavors and textures—sponge or granola, creamy yogurt or custard, fresh fruit, and a crunchy topping. In this version, I swapped heavier ingredients for lighter choices so you can enjoy the classic trifle experience without feeling weighed down.
Layered desserts are perfect for showcasing contrasting textures and flavors. This mixed berry trifle is ideal for warm-weather gatherings, dinner parties, or a simple everyday treat since berries are widely available year-round.

Ingredients for berry trifle
- strawberry yogurt (about 1½ cups)
- sliced fresh strawberries (½ cup)
- fresh blackberries (½ cup)
- sliced bananas (½ cup)
- fresh blueberries (½ cup)
- granola (½ cup)
- sliced almonds (1 tbsp)
How to make the berry trifle
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Yields: 2 trifles
- Slice strawberries and bananas into bite-sized pieces.
- Place a spoonful of strawberry yogurt into a trifle cup or small bowl.
- Add half the sliced strawberries and the blackberries over the yogurt.
- Spoon 2–3 more spoonfuls of yogurt on top of the fruit layer.
- Sprinkle half the granola over the yogurt to add crunch.
- Top the granola with another 2–3 spoonfuls of yogurt.
- Add half the blueberries and the sliced bananas on top of the final yogurt layer.
- Finish by sprinkling with half of the sliced almonds. Repeat the assembly for the second trifle and serve immediately.
If you prefer a more decorative presentation, arrange the fruit to create contrasting colors in each layer so the trifle looks as good as it tastes.
Recipe notes and tips
- Have all ingredients prepped and at hand before assembling. Granola will soften if left in contact with yogurt, so quicker assembly preserves texture.
- Use ripe, flavorful fruit for the best taste. Avoid underripe or overly bitter pieces.
- Chill the serving glasses or bowls for 20–30 minutes before assembling. A cool dish keeps the trifle refreshing when served.
- This is a great make-and-assemble-at-the-table dessert for dinner parties—prepare ingredients ahead and layer just before serving to keep the granola crunchy.

Variations to try
- Change the fruit: Omit bananas or replace them with raspberries, mango, peaches, or drained canned mandarins for different flavors and textures.
- Change the yogurt: Swap strawberry yogurt for vanilla, lemon, or Greek yogurt to vary the creaminess and flavor profile.
- Change the garnish: Use chocolate or fruit coulis, a dusting of cocoa, extra fresh berries, or toasted nuts in place of almonds for a different finish.
Can you make this ahead of time?
Because granola softens as it absorbs moisture, it’s best to assemble the trifles shortly before serving. If you don’t mind softer granola, you can assemble earlier, but for optimal crunch and texture serve immediately after layering.
Enjoy making this fresh berry trifle at home—it’s an easy, colorful dessert that’s light enough for everyday treats and pretty enough for entertaining.
