Taco Cleanse Cookbook Review: Who Should Try It?

Unless you’ve somehow missed the buzz, there’s a playful little cookbook that has been turning heads: The Taco Cleanse Cookbook: A Tortilla-Based Diet Proven to Change Your Life. The book sparked attention across mainstream and lifestyle media and even drew curiosity from celebrities, which helped push it into conversations about food, humor, and creative dieting.

I recently got a copy of The Taco Cleanse Cookbook, written by Wes Allison, Stephanie Bogdanich, Molly Frisinger, and Jessica Morris. The authors open with a bold, funny disclaimer about the book’s tone and intentions, so you know right away you’re in for something lighthearted and inventive rather than a strict nutritional manifesto. The foreword, written by Laura Beck, sets a playful tone and prepares the reader for a collection of taco-based recipes, tips, and kitchen shortcuts designed to make tacos approachable for every kind of cook.

The early chapters lay out a practical pantry guide for taco enthusiasts: the pantry staples, spices, sauces, and tortillas you’ll want on hand to execute recipes without last-minute runs to the store. The book also explains how embracing tacos more often can be a joyful and positive change in your eating habits, and it offers sensible shortcuts for busy people who still want fresh, flavorful tacos without investing hours each night.

To test the concept and expand my own taco repertoire, I tried several recipes from the book. I prepared Mexican Chopped Salad Tacos, Smoked Brisket and Jalapeño Mac and Cheese Tacos, and Healing Jalapeño Popper Tacos. For a beverage, I made the Mind-Limbering Michelada, which complemented the meals and felt essential to the overall tasting experience.

The Mexican Chopped Salad Tacos were crisp and refreshing, showcasing bright vegetables and vibrant seasonings in a plant-forward format that would please anyone looking for a lighter taco option. The Smoked Brisket and Jalapeño Mac and Cheese Tacos became my favorite of the trio: the recipe included an accessible homemade seitan that mimicked the texture of slow-cooked meat and paired beautifully with a creamy nacho-cheese-styled mac and cheese. That combination delivered bold, comforting flavors that work especially well for dinner parties or a hearty weeknight meal.

I had high expectations for the Healing Jalapeño Popper Tacos, which are a playful riff on the classic finger food. While the overall idea was solid and the bean-cheese blend makes a genuinely tasty dip, the taco construction needed a bit of tweaking to reach its full potential. Minor adjustments to the filling balance and assembly method remedied that for subsequent attempts.

The Mind-Limbering Michelada was a pleasantly tart, well-seasoned drink that cut through the richness of the tacos and refreshed the palate. It’s a drink I would make again for taco nights, barbecues, or casual gatherings where a lively, easy cocktail is welcome.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its breadth: there are numerous recipes for dips, sauces, fillings, and toppings, so you can mix and match elements to build endless taco variations. That flexibility makes the cookbook useful beyond a single meal plan; it’s a resource for creativity, party planning, and everyday cooking. I found myself excited to explore more of the components and to host taco nights where guests can assemble their own combinations.

The book also includes a lighthearted quiz—“What Kind of Taco-Eater Are You?”—which adds to the playful experience. My result was “Taco Contortionist,” a fun label that reflected my willingness to bend taco rules and experiment with fillings and formats.

Most importantly, after increasing the taco content of my diet for a short period, I felt energized and enthusiastic about eating. The recipes encouraged variety and creativity while remaining approachable for cooks of different skill levels. If you enjoy tacos, playful cookbooks, and recipes that invite experimentation, The Taco Cleanse Cookbook is an entertaining, practical addition to your kitchen library.
