I’m a little early this month because it’s time for the Recipe Redux gathering. The theme is New Year, New Ingredient: introduce a new (or new-to-you) ingredient you’ve discovered recently and show how you use it in a healthy recipe.

I’ve always enjoyed exploring seasonal and regional foods, which is why I couldn’t resist trying escargots while I was in France. Back in Maine they’re rare, but winter citrus is everywhere. This season I’ve enjoyed grapefruit and clementines, and one citrus variety in particular has stolen my heart: blood oranges.

At work we introduce a new fruit or vegetable to kids each month. January was citrus, and many kids had seen ordinary navels but few had tasted blood oranges. After that first bite I was hooked. I enjoy them fresh, but I also wanted to pair their bright, sweet-tart flavor with something warm and spiced—chai tea lattes are one of my winter favorites. The result: a blood orange chai tea latte that balances warm chai spices with the tangy sweetness of fresh blood orange juice.

Description

Bright, warming, and dairy-free: this blood orange chai tea latte blends brewed chai with fresh blood orange juice, unsweetened vanilla almond milk, vanilla extract, and a touch of honey or maple syrup. It’s a cozy, slightly tangy treat for cold days.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 chai tea bags
  • ¼ cup fresh blood orange juice
  • ½ cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (use maple for a vegan option)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ground cinnamon, for topping

Instructions

  1. Pour the boiling water into a large mug over the chai tea bags. Let steep for 3 minutes, then remove and discard the tea bags.
  2. Stir the blood orange juice into the brewed chai.
  3. In a microwave-safe mug, combine the almond milk, honey or maple syrup, and vanilla extract.
  4. Microwave the milk mixture on high for about one minute, until hot but not boiling.
  5. Optional: froth the warm almond milk with a milk frother for foam.
  6. Pour the warmed milk into the chai and orange mixture, stir gently, and dust the top with cinnamon. Serve immediately.
